anon in love (1960) – song cycle

Anon in Love is a collection of six settings of colourful English poetry of love and seduction from the 16th and 17th centuries.

In it, we hear gentle hymns to the beauty of the beloved alongside broad ballads of tricks and conquests straight from the tavern.

Scored by Walton for tenor and guitar, it also exists in an arrangement by Christopher Palmer for high voice and piano. Anon in Love is a clever, modern, show-stopping piece that would be a fabulous addition to any recital programme.
